Echo in Paediatric Critical Care (EPICC)

Date: 22nd to 23rd September 2017 (Friday - Saturday)

Venue: Women's and Children's Hospital North Adelaide SA

This specialised two day course is aimed at the non-cardiologist paediatric critical care specialist/trainee. It aims to teach proficiency in attaining basic paediatric echocardiography views as well as identifying and applying knowledge of pathophysiology in the Paediatric Critical Care setting. With a low candidate to facilitator ratio of 3 - 4 candidates in each group, the course will provide optimal opportunity for hands on experience. The course consists of morning lectures and afternoon practical demonstration and hands on experience. Children with structurally normal hearts and with congenital and acquired heart conditions will be available.

This course is accredited by CICM for following CPD/MOPS points:

Lectures: Category 2A, 1 point per hour.
Skills Stations: Category 3B, 3 points per hour.

Currently, there is no other similar course available in Australia. Course registration is by expression of interest/invitation only and places are extremely limited to maximise candidate clinical opportunity.   • 09.00 Basic paediatric views and sequential analysis
  • 09.45 Image optimisation/ probe selection/ / knobology/ tips and tricks, colour, Doppler
  • 10.30 Morning tea
  • 10.45 Ventricular function, volume assessment, cardiomyopathy, pericardial effusion, coronaries +/-Kawasaki
  • 11.30 Shunts: PDA: view, direction, size, ASD, VSD
  • 12.15 Lunch, all walk to cardiology department
  • 13.00 Skill stations x 4 each 50 minutes
  • 16.30 close for the day
  • 18.30 Course dinner (TBA)

Day 2 - Saturday, 23rd September 2017

  • 09.00 Pulmonary hypertension, TR jet, PR jet, PICU applications
  • 09.45 Assessment of valves, endocarditis, coarctation of aorta
  • 10.30 Morning tea
  • 10.45 Other congenital heart disease unoperated: Tetralogy of Fallot, congenitally corrected TGA,Ebstein's anomaly
  • 11.30 Post-operative hearts: early and late complications: RV-PA conduit, BT shunt, Fontan, mechanical valves
  • 12.15 Lunch, all walk to cardiology department at WCH
  • 13.00 Hands on Cases/ Skill stations x 3 each 60 minutes
